Vacuum cupping is an ancient therapeutic technique that involves placing cups on the skin to create a vacuum. This suction draws the skin and superficial muscle layer up into the cup which increases blood flow to that area.
How Does it Work?
Traditionally, heat was used to create the vacuum inside glass cups. A flame would be breifly introduced and then removed before the cup was placed on the skin. As the air cooled, it created a suction affect.
However, I along with other modern practitioners use a pump which attaches to plastic and/or silicone cups to achieve the same vacuum affect.
What will it Feel Like?
When the cups are applied, you'll typically feel a pulling and/or lifting sensation on your skin. This can range from mild to quite noticable, depending on the level of suction used and how the area of skin/muscle reacts.
What are the Benefits?
Pain Refief - Cupping is often used to alleviate various types of pain, such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, knee pain, and muscle pain. It may work by interuppting pain signals or by increasing bloood flow and reducing muscle tension.
Reduced Inflamation - The increased circulation to the treated area can help redue inflammation.
Improved Blood Flow - The suction helps to increase blood circulation to the local area, which can promote healing and deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the tissue.
Muscle Relaxation - The negative pressure can help to relax tight muscles and reduce muscle knots.
Increased Range of Motion - By reducting muscle tightness and pain, cupping can help to improve flexibility and range of motion.
Detoxification - Some believe that cupping can help remove toxins from the body by imporving circulation and lymphatic drainage.
Overall Well-being and Relaxation - Many individuals find cupping therapy to be relaxing and experience a sense of uplifted well-being after a treatment.
